The Lustgarten Foundation Mourns the Loss of Dr. Randy Pausch

It is with profound sadness that the Board and staff of The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research mourn the loss of Dr. Randy Pausch, the Carnegie-Mellon computer sciences professor who became a household name for his now famous “Last Lecture.”

With his fearless examination of life and death, Randy has been and will continue to be an inspiration to millions. Randy understood well that scientific research is our best hope for finding a cure, and his tireless efforts to advance the state of the science for pancreatic cancer are deeply appreciated. There has never before been a more outspoken and effective advocate for this disease.

It has been an honor and a privilege to know Randy Pausch. He will be missed.

Sincerely,

About Randy Pausch

Randy Pausch

Last September, 46-year old computer science professor, Randy Pausch, delivered a “Last Lecture” before a crowd of 400 students and colleagues at Carnegie-Mellon University. This lecture was especially poignant because he had just learned that his pancreatic cancer had recurred with tumors to his liver and spleen, only one year after receiving an operation to remove the disease. Doctors said it was one of the most aggressive recurrences they’d ever seen.

"The Wall Street Journal" featured Randy Pausch’s story, and more than six million people have since watched his now famous “Last Lecture” on the Web. Randy is a strong advocate in the fight against this little known, yet highly fatal disease.

10 Years of researching a cure

The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research is the nation's largest private, nonprofit supporter of pancreatic cancer research.

For the past 10 years, we have been supporting promising pancreatic cancer research at world-class institutions. To date, we have provided more than $20 million for research into the cause and cure of this disease.  Key projects include:

  • Sequencing the genome of pancreatic cancers to identify all of the genes that cause this fatal disease
  • Developing a simple blood test to detect the disease in its earliest stages, before even the most sensitive scans can find it
  • Developing targeted drugs to better treat the disease
