In His Own Words: Author Joseph A. Pinto
“My father loved the sea. Fishing, boating, watching the sun come up from the surf’s edge, as long as my father had the sea around him or the roar of the waves in his ear, he was at peace. When he passed, I barely functioned for six months. Once I came around, a voice inside my head said to write for him. So I wrote a story which would put his soul to rest at sea the way he would’ve wanted."
"My father’s fight with cancer had something of a storybook ending. When he first learned he had pancreatic cancer, his initial prognosis was three months at best. Cool as a cucumber, he declared, ‘I’m taking the ball and I’m scoring a touchdown. I’m going to beat this.’ My father had been an amazing athlete in his youth, and this was his way of declaring war. I never doubted him for a second, nor did I believe in the diagnosis. So from there, our rally cry was born - never drop the ball! My father fought for fifteen months. A week before he passed, his body shut down. He could barely speak. He saw me, rose from his bed, grabbed my arm and said, ‘I’m giving you the ball. You run with it now.’ They were the last words he spoke to me."
"I was so stunned I didn’t realize, until later that night, that my father had passed the torch to me. It was the most humbling moment of my life. Cancer may have claimed my father’s body but his spirit grew and radiated before my eyes."
