Pancreatic Cancer on the National Agenda: A Progress Review Group
In 2000, The Lustgarten Foundation was one of several advocacy groups to join with the NCI and leading experts for a Pancreatic Cancer Progress Review Group (PRG). The goal of the PRG was to develop a national agenda for pancreatic cancer research. The final report of the PRG, Pancreatic Cancer: An Agenda for Action, was made available through the Program Assessment Branch of NCI.
In response to the Report, NCI issued Strategic Plan for Addressing the Recommendations of the Pancreatic Cancer Progress Review Group, representing an unprecedented level of commitment to help "jump-start" pancreatic cancer research. The NCI response included a commitment to fund Pancreatic Cancer Specific Programs of Research Excellence (SPOREs). SPOREs are major funding commitments to academic centers, which are then required make significant institutional commitments to pancreatic cancer research. In 2003, NCI awarded three Pancreatic Cancer SPOREs.
