Vice-President, Research

The Lustgarten Foundation, the nation’s largest non-profit dedicated to pancreatic cancer research, is seeking an in-house Director of Research. Must have proven experience managing scientific/research programs, projects, and budgets such as previous positions in non-profit, pharma/biotech, or academic institution.

The Vice-President, Research will work with the Chief Scientist, Chief Medical Officer, and the President and CEO in the development and implementation of the Scientific/Clinical Research Program. The VP will fulfill the mission of the Foundation to advance the scientific and medical research related to the diagnosis, treatment, and cure of pancreatic cancer and to positively impact the lives of pancreatic cancer patients and their families.

Specifically, the Vice-President, Research will:

  • Work with the Chief Scientist in the implementation and ongoing development and refinement of the Strategic Research Plan including:
    • Identifying the researchers & institutions to conduct the research
    • Developing the best programs and grants to most effectively accomplish the goals and participate in evaluating grant proposals
  • Work with the Chief Medical Officer in the strategic direction and operational oversight in launching a national clinical/translational program to impact the lives of patients including:
    • Establish mutually beneficial relationships with corporate, industry and academic institutions
    • Focus on patient-centric clinical research that aligns decisions with patients’ needs including the delivery of specific education and support patients need to make these decisions and participate in their own care
  • Monitor developments, trends and competitive landscapes to further the Foundation’s mission and identify the newest areas of both basic and clinical/translational research to present emerging opportunities to leadership
  • Engage with scientific leadership at Stand Up to Cancer and develop and maintain other key partnerships with organizations such as NCI, AACR, ASCO
  • Coordinate the activities of the Scientific Advisory Board including organizing the annual in-person conference and telephone meetings
  • Work with the Development Office in engaging with the highest-level donors to keep them abreast of research highlights and breakthroughs
  • Oversee the Research Operation Manager and the direction of the Grants program and help negotiate grant contracts as necessary
  • Develop potential business opportunities where appropriate such as the commercialization of research efforts, including the Organoid and Early Detection programs. Explore opportunities with Venture Philanthropy
  • Represent the Foundation at select scientific and professional conferences

Applicants should have:

  • Advanced degree/s in Life Sciences
  • Scientist with a strong research background, preferably in cancer
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct and/or manage scientific/clinical research programs, projects, budgets, through one or more successful roles in: non-profit foundations, academic institutions, research centers in pharma, academia, biotechs, government agencies
  • Strong communications skills to interact effectively with the scientific community as well as conveying technical information to the lay community

Vice-President of Marketing and Communications

Overview of Role:
The Lustgarten Foundation is the largest private funder of pancreatic cancer research in the world. Based in Woodbury, N.Y., the Foundation’s mission is to cure pancreatic cancer by funding scientific and clinical research related to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of pancreatic cancer; providing research information and clinical support services to patients, caregivers and individuals at high risk; and increasing public awareness and hope for those dealing with this disease.
The Vice President of Marketing & Communications will further develop and implement the national marketing and communications plan to promote and enhance the Foundation’s brand, expand its presence nationally, and help grow its annual fundraising budget.

A team to support the development and execution of the Foundation’s marketing and communications strategy.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive national, integrated strategic marketing and communications plan to advance the Foundation’s brand identity, broaden awareness of its mission, and help increase donor support. The Foundation currently has significant tristate presence and is seeking an increased national presence and focus.
  • Develop and manage short- and long-term plans and budgets for the marketing program and its activities, monitor progress, evaluate performance, and submit reports as required. Conduct competitive research, understand analytics, and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Ensure effective marketing and communication to key audiences: patients and their families, donors, the medical and scientific community, opinion leaders, the media, and the general public.
  • Develop and enhance the Foundation’s digital presence, including website and social media channels, and all related online content initiatives.
  • Actively engage, cultivate, and manage relationships with the media; conduct press outreach to maximize coverage of research, events, milestone activities (e.g. awareness month) and announcements; and handle all responses to media inquiries. Manage media oversight at major events.
  • Source and manage the use of external resources where appropriate (e.g. digital media experts, design firms, production agencies, printers, photographers).
  • Oversee production of all new marketing and communications materials including public service announcements (PSAs) for TV, radio, print and digital platforms; place PSAs with appropriate media outlets nationally.
  • Create materials to support fundraising activities including direct mail campaign. Direct mail program to be outsourced.
  • Accept such additional duties as may from time to time be required for the advancement of the Foundation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, or related field is preferred. Advanced degree a plus.
  • Seasoned professional with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in positions with increasing responsibilities who is now in a senior management role in the marketing and communications field for such organizations as a non-profit, corporation, and/or an agency. Non-profit experience preferred.
  • Proven results and experience with amplifying messaging through effective use of traditional and digital media platforms.
  • Experience in handling media and public relations efforts.
  • Experience in building a team of communications specialists. Superior management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers.
  • Innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans.
  • Possesses a solid marketing background and work experience managing a variety of tactical promotional projects end-to-end, including paid advertising campaigns and digital marketing techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, writing, designing, and producing communications plans and materials, including presentations.
  • Basic understanding of SEM, paid search, SEO and able to partner with experts in these areas as well as content marketing, web and marketing analytics platforms.
  • Knowledge of graphic design best practices and current trends and proven creative direction experience.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Out of town, overnight travel may be required.

Content Writer

Overview of Role:

Based in Woodbury, N.Y., the Lustgarten Foundation’s mission is to cure pancreatic cancer by funding scientific and clinical research related to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of pancreatic cancer; providing research information and clinical support services to patients, caregivers and individuals at high risk; and increasing public awareness and hope for those dealing with this disease.

We are looking for a tech-savvy, energetic and motivated individual with a passion for writing across various channels and an interest in health/science to join our Marketing & Communications team. The Content Writer will work with the Communications Manager and Social Media & PR Manager to implement the national marketing and communications plan to promote and enhance the Foundation’s brand, expand its presence nationally, and help grow its annual fundraising budget.

Key Responsibilities:

  • In conjunction with the Web Developer, spearhead the weekly blog series, including developing ideas and generating content that will enhance the website and improve SEO
  • Conduct daily media monitoring to identify and disseminate articles of interest to constituents
  • Develop blogs, website content, emails, and social media posts based on breaking news about the Foundation, the pancreatic cancer landscape, or other research/fundraising milestones
  • Liaise with event and walk leaders, patients, survivors, donors, select clinicians, and Lustgarten Foundation leadership to secure quotes and inspirational stories to use for website/blog content
  • Assist with the development of the bi-annual print newsletter and monthly e-newsletter and other donor and patient-focused materials as needed
  • Conduct research and develop documents targeted at various audiences to support Social Media & PR Manager and Communications Manager (including key message points, social media manual, letters, other documents as needed to support development and events staff)
  • Conduct other marketing duties as needed in support of the Marketing & Communications team’s objectives

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or related field
  • Minimum two years of experience in crafting content for social media, websites, blogs, and print materials
  • Experience in SEO and knowledge of search engine marketing
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, research and organizational skills
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office and Hootsuite or similar platform
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple projects/responsibilities simultaneously

Web Developer

Lustgarten Foundation is seeking an early-career Web Developer to oversee the day-to-day website operations and manage relationships with vendors.

The Web Developer is responsible for managing and performing development, implementation and maintenance of the infrastructure, hardware, and software utilized for the organization’s website. This includes monitoring web traffic performance and to identify, prevent and resolve issues.

The Web Developer coordinates with stakeholders to ensure that the site provides content and functionality that meet the business needs of the organization, maintains appropriate security, and troubleshoots any issues.

A deep understanding and use of web analytics is required. Candidate will work with design and content teams to ensure SEO-friendly website

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient in HTML, responsive CSS and open standards in web technologies

Raiser’s Edge Database Administrator

Responsible for the performance, integrity and security of the Foundation’s Raiser’s Edge database, which currently contains 550,000 records. Involved in the strategic planning and development of the database as the Foundation grows, as well as troubleshooting issues on behalf of the users. The Raiser’s Edge Database Administrator will oversee the Prospect Research Associate and two Data Gift Processors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises Prospect Research Associate and Raiser’s Edge Coordinator
  • Manage Raiser’s Edge donor database, including maintenance, user accounts, global changes, gift entry, reporting, queries, and data clean-up projects with the goal of providing current, consistent and accurate data.
  • Develop and deliver clear and accurate reporting and tracking vehicles and instructions for reports, dashboards and data extracts.
  • Reconcile and close monthly development financials on time.
  • Perform successful and timely NCOA updates for direct mail campaigns.
  • Produce mailing lists, pledge reminders, and donor invoices on a timely basis. Prepare data merges.
  • Create and implement up-to-date Standard Operating Procedures for entry and reporting and ensure all entries conform to these procedures.
  • Develop, run and review timely donor reporting audits to ensure accurate gift entry and acknowledgment.
  • Manage credit card gift processing and document steps, including changes in the organization’s credit card processing.
  • Manage donations for our national Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk series, including day of money and online donations. Ensure online donations and day of data are entered and proved on schedule.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum four years of experience in Raiser’s Edge, preferably as an administrator in a non-profit fundraising environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Microsoft Excel, and a demonstrated ability to perform mail-merge functions
  • Strong ability and commitment to accuracy and database integrity
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and exercise independent action

Raiser’s Edge Coordinator

Lustgarten Foundation is seeking a Raiser’s Edge Coordinator to join the Fundraising Operations team.  The Raiser’s Edge Coordinator is responsible for maintaining all data, processing gifts and performing data clean up projects for Lustgarten’ s database containing over 500,000 records.  Candidate will also work with Classy, O-Matic and other integrated software.

Primary Functions:

  • Maintain and update information on constituent record
  • Process gifts, pledges and other donations on a timely basis
  • Optimize database for fundraising mailing efforts, including merging; proofing; printing; and preparing donor acknowledgement
  • Work with Database Administrator on reconciling gifts for audits
  • Proficient with data manipulation, importing/exporting
  • Run Raiser’s Edge reports (financial, analytical, etc.)
  • Adhere to operating procedures for data entry
  • Perform data clean-up projects and other necessary tasks to ensure integrity of the database
  • Manage matching gift submissions and payments

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Three years of experience using Raiser’s Edge
  • Experience with import/export. Omatic and Classy experience a plus
  • Possess exceptional attention to detail to ensure integrity of database

Prospect Research Associate

The Prospect Research Associate will be responsible for proactive donor and prospect research efforts to aid increased national funding. The Prospect Research Associate plays a key role in the execution of donor engagement strategy by providing information integral to the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors and prospects.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identify the type of information to look for and determine what relevant donor information (biographical, financial, philanthropic interest, history of previous donations, prior Foundation solicitations, etc.) is needed to craft fundraising and cultivation strategies
  • Provide high-level research on individuals, corporations, foundations and organizations using a variety of electronic and print resources and tools including such programs as Donor Search, the Foundation Database and other
  • Provide professional-level briefings for the Development staff and Lustgarten Foundation executives, as well as volunteer leadership and members of the Boards of Directors
  • Assist the Development Team in the creation and application of wealth and affinity scoring of individual, corporate and foundation prospect
  • Manage third-party relationships with vendors that provide data services and research tools
  •  Compose, write, edit, and proofread briefing materials including, but not limited to, donor research profiles or reports, and other basic research reports. Ensure accuracy and completeness of reports and other documents
  • Monitor market trends and media sources for relevant information on current donors
  • Work on special projects and assist with donor cultivation events and occasional special events as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as internet-based communications and research tools such as Donor Search, Google and others
  • Proficiency in Raiser’s Edge a plus

Senior Accountant

The Lustgarten Foundation is seeking a full-time Senior Accountant. The primary responsibility of this position is to ensure that all financial information is appropriately and accurately recorded in the accounting system. This position reports to the Director of Finance.

Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):

  • Gather and evaluate information necessary to complete the monthly financial close
  • Prepare financial schedules and record monthly journal entries in the accounting system
  • Analyze and reconcile general ledger accounts, follow up on discrepancies
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations
  • Prepare detailed monthly cash receipt and disbursement reports, as well as related reconciliations
  • Perform routine cash to revenue proofs, reconciling general ledger to fundraising database
  • Maintain fixed asset inventory listing and depreciation ledger
  • Maintain prepaid expense schedule and reconcile to general ledger
  • Maintain records of temporarily restricted contributions and releases from restriction
  • Maintain records for period-end revenue and expense accruals and prepare related journal entries
  • Prepare schedules for annual Form 990 information return
  • Assist in preparation of required state business, charitable, and sales tax exemption filings
  • Assisting in schedule preparation for annual external audit
  • Assisting with other Finance department tasks and special projects

Position Qualifications:

  • 2-4 years of not-for-profit accounting or audit experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting
  • Strong knowledge of MS Excel
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task efficiently
  • NetSuite experience is a plus
