Thanks to private funding, 100% of every dollar donated to The Lustgarten Foundation goes directly to pancreatic cancer research.

Research Investigator Grant Program

  1. Goal - to identify and fund significant Researchers and Research Projects that will lead to early diagnosis, improved and effective therapy, and ultimately a cure for pancreatic cancer.

  2. Strategy - to strenghten a focused research strategy whereby the Foundation will work with leading scientists and clinicians and support their dedicated efforts on research topics that offer high promise to achieve our goals.

  3. Qualifications- for Research Investigator (RI) Grant:
    1. Outstanding research accomplishments as evidenced by publications in refereed journals, honors, awards and/or other meritorious recognitions.
    2. Engaged in significant research dealing with pancreatic cancer.
    3. Holds an appointment at a NCI designated Cancer Center.
    4. Requirements:  must be able to devote 50% of total research efforts to pancreatic cancer, inclusive of the proposed project, and a significant effort, more than 25% as P.I. of proposed project; must also have staff members in laboratory who will dedicate 100% effort to the proposal.
  4. Concept:
    1. Competitive Grant - to be peer reviewed
    2. Incentive and Award funding program:
      1. To provide an incentive for scientists to pursue important goals in pancreatic cancer research. Grants of up to $500,000 per year for 3 years will be given to support the research project proposal. Continued funding annually will be contingent on measurable progress each year.
      2. Projects that can be completed in shorter time frames and/or lower budgets are encouraged. In the essence of expediting research projects to be done in the shortest possible timeframe so as to move the field forward, The Foundation will consider a project with a justifiable budget of $1.5m that can be accomplished in a time frame less than 3 years.
  5. Nomination/Review Process:
    1. Nomination for the Research Investigator Program will come from two sources:
      1. Directors of NCI designated Cancer Centers will be invited to nominate one candidate for consideration.
      2. Nominated by the SAB of The Lustgarten Foundation.
    2. Candidates will be requested to submit a brief concept proposal - format to be provided by The Lustgarten Foundation.
    3. All Concept Proposals will be peer reviewed and the highest ranked will be invited to submit a full proposal.
    4. The SAB will review all full proposals and make recommendations for funding to The Lustgarten Foundation.
  6. Budget:
    1. Requested budgets will be considered and evaluated as part of the competitive selection process.
    2. Grants up to $500,000 per year, maximum three years, will be considered.
    3. Indirect costs - maximum 20% of direct costs, not applicable to equipment.
  7. Targeted Research Areas
    1. Diagnostics - Early Detection and Monitoring.
    2. Therapeutics - Drug Development and Drug Delivery.
      1. Targeting Cancer Cells - KRAS, others
      2. Targeting Stroma - Immune, Vascular, Fibroblasts
    3. Prevention - Combating pancreatitis, obesity, inflammation.
