Cablevision’s support of The Lustgarten Foundation ensures that 100% of every donation goes directly to pancreatic cancer research.

Letter from the Executive Director: Kerri Kaplan

Fall 2010

It would be difficult not to notice the brilliant amethyst pendant decorating the cover of our Fall 2010 issue of Progress & Promise. It’s easy to be excited by the news that London Jewelers and David Yurman have joined with The Lustgarten Foundation in the fight against pancreatic cancer with this limited edition design, created exclusively to benefit our work.

David Yurman’s signature designs are renowned for capturing the essence of relaxed American luxury. A Long Island legend for 84 years, London Jewelers offers a dazzling selection of fine jewels and timepieces. Both brands are dedicated to the highest standards of excellence, innovation and quality, and as you will read, the idea for a pendant was borne of our shared experiences with pancreatic cancer. We are honored to have the support of such distinguished friends for this special effort, which holds potential to generate significant funding for research.

The pendant is available in sterling silver and 18k gold designs, and makes a wonderful gift to yourself or someone you love. (Or both!) Net proceeds from the sale of the signature pendant will benefit the Foundation. With holiday season just around the corner, we hope you will keep pancreatic cancer research in mind as you make your gift-giving plans. And, in case you don’t have a penchant for jewelry, the Foundation will once again participate in the Champions for Charity Holiday Shopping Benefit, where 25% of all eligible pre-tax purchases will be donated to participating organizations. Read on for more Gifts That Give Back ideas. And remember, Cablevision’s commitment to underwrite all of our administrative expenses ensures that 100% of every dollar we receive goes directly to pancreatic cancer research.

In this issue of P&P we also recognize enduring fundraising activities that raise vital dollars for our work, such as the Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk and Santaniello Memorial Golf Tournament. Both of these events celebrated their 10-year anniversaries in 2010, making them “oldies, but goodies” among Foundation fundraisers. The 2010 Long Island Walk raised more than $1 million for research (bringing its total dollars raised to more than $7 million), while the Santaniello Golf Tournament has raised more than $200,000 since its inception. Congratulations to the many dedicated friends who have grown these events through the years, and thanks for taking steps with us in the search for a cure.

In addition to fundraising updates, this issue of P&P brings you news of our ongoing curePC public awareness campaign, which is preparing to launch a new series of Public Service Announcements (PSAs). Also included is Mila’s Research Update Corner, which tackles the timely topic of cancer biomarkers. And, we will tell you about our entrée into social media, as well as some new partnerships that are adding value to our patient information services.

We hope you will find this latest installment of Progress & Promise simply dazzling!

P.S.  We’d like to recognize longtime friend and corporate sponsor, Harry Dickran, Jr. and the talented team at Levon Graphics Corporation, for printing the cover of this issue in full color to fully portray the beauty of the pendant. Your generosity knows no limits, and we are deeply grateful for your enduring support.
